Patti Smith

I CONSIDER MYSELF TO BE A “NEWCOMER” IN THE ART WORLD. EVEN THOUGH, I HAVE WORKED IN THIS PROFESSION SINCE 1992. I BEGAN MY STYLE OF PAINTING WITH A FEW BASIC CONCEPTS. THE NEED FOR WOODEN CANVAS SEEMED IMPORTANT TO ME FOR THE SIMPLE IDEA OF HAVING A MORE ARCHITECTURAL PRESENCE OF WEIGHT. I ALSO FOUND A CLOSE CONNECTION WITH EACH PIECE WHEN USING ONLY MY HANDS IN APPLYING LAYERS UPON LAYERS OF TINTED WAXES TO ACHIEVE THE FINAL RESULT. OVER SIXTY LAYERS OF APPLICATION, EACH ONE AS IMPORTANT FROM THE FIRST TO THE LAST, REVEALED DEPTH AND DIMENSION NEEDED IN MY MIND’S EYE.

ALTHOUGH I AM A MEMPHIS, TN BASED ARTIST; I WAS ABLE TO EXPAND MY CLIENT BASE THRU GALLERIES, AND SHOWROOMS IN TENNESSEE, ALABAMA AND FLORIDA. I FORMED A COMPANY KNOWN AS DESIGNERS WORKROOM, A PARTNERSHIP, TO ASSIST DESIGNERS IN THE COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL DESIGN FIELDS. MY STYLE OF ART IS SELF TAUGHT AND I EXPLORE THIS STYLE CONSTANTLY.

IN OCTOBER OF 2008 I WAS SURPRISED AND PROUD TO LEARN THE FEDERAL RESERVE BOARD HAD CHOSEN ME ARTIST OF THAT YEAR IN THE CATEGORY OF “WOOD”. THE PIECE ADDED TO THEIR COLLECTION WAS TITLED “BAMBOO” (48”X48”) ENCAUSTIC ON WOOD. THIS PIECE IS EXHIBITED IN THE FEDERAL RESERVE BANK LOCATED IN NEW ORLEANS, LA, WHEN NOT ON TOUR INTERNATIONALLY.
